Quote on Back Book Cover
by
West A. Hamilton

"From the beginning of this [Civil War] struggle, [African Americans] took part ---

on the Union side thousands of run-a-way slaves joined the Army and Navy.

Likewise thousands took part on the Confederate side

actuated by a type of loyalty unsurpassed by human annals."
~West A. Hamilton, Colonel, Infantry Reserve
Hampton Conference on National Defense (November 1940)

On the back cover of Entangled In Freedom: A Civil War Story is a quote by Honorary Brigadier General West A. Hamilton of the National Guard. Serving in the United States Military for 44 years, Brigadier General West A. Hamilton was a veteran of two world wars. He was known as a vocal civic leader; and The Hamiltonian Galley located in Washington D.C. is in honor of his family namesake. His speech at the 1940 Hampton Conference on National Defense records in history that African Americans served with the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War (1861-1865).
